Experience:

As a best-selling author, A-list professional public speaker, and media commentator, Michael brings exceptional communication skills to his work as a lawyer. He also brings a breadth of practice experience as an advocate who has appeared before tribunals, commissions, government committees, trial courts, appeal courts, and the Supreme Court of Canada.

His employment experience includes working as a litigator with Bay Street law firms, acting as in-house counsel for a venture capital firm, and serving as an advisor to the Cabinet of Ontario on labour and employment issues.

As a litigator, Michael distinguished himself when he self-represented against State Farm U.S., the largest insurance company in America, after it failed to make payment on a fire insurance policy covering a property on which he held the mortgage.

During a six-year legal battle that tested the limits of the standard mortgage clause, he took the case from trial all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada, where he obtained a rare unanimous judgment against State Farm. The decision had a major impact on the insurance market, as it saved homeowners from paying out hundreds of millions of dollars in new premiums.

Since winning this seminal case, Michael has been involved in litigation in the areas of administrative, constitutional, regulatory, employment, insurance, and libel & defamation law. During the last three years, he has devoted his practice exclusively to defending doctors and other healthcare professionals before regulatory colleges and the courts, while dealing with all aspects of litigation, including the complexities of filing on CaseLines.

With a JD from the University of Toronto Law School, an LLM from Columbia Law School, and two books to his credit, Michael has a passion for research and writing and thrives on drafting clear, persuasive legal arguments.

A collaborative professional, Michael is pleased to assist in a variety of ways and is available to act as a lawyer, full-service clerk, or communication consultant.

When he is not working on a file, you can find Michael watching an NBA game or perfecting his three-point shot on the basketball court in his condo building.
